Q:   Does ALANA buy jewelry?

Q:   What does ALANA buy?

A:   Alana is looking specifically for unique jewelry items of any gemstone, metal, or era.  Collectible items such as vintage handbags, silverware, and hollowware are also of interest. 


Q:   Do I need an appraisal for selling jewelry to ALANA?

A: No, you do not have to get an appraisal for items you are trying to sell. However, if you already have one, please bring it along. 


Q:   Can ALANA appraise my jewelry? 

A:   No & Yes.  ALANA, Inc. is not a licensed insurance appraiser.  We have an independent appraiser evaluate our inventory.  We can send your jewelry items to our appraiser as well.  Depending on the type of appraisal needed, appraisal fees range from $75.00 - $100.00.  If you are interested in selling to ALANA, there is no fee for her to review it.


Q:   What is classified as antique jewelry? 

A:   According to government guidelines, only jewelry items that are at least 100 years old are considered antiques.  In the jewelry business, we commonly refer to antiques to be from the Art Deco period (c.1920-1935) and earlier.


Q:   Why buy estate jewelry?

A:   One of the many advantages of buying estate jewelry is that much of the cost has been absorbed by the original buyer.  An estate item can cost as little as 25% of its original retail selling price.  


Q:   Is ALANA, Inc. a corporation? or family-owned?

A:   ALANA, Inc. is a non-franchised, mother-daughter family owned, local Seattle business.


Q:   Where does ALANA, Inc.'s jewelry originate?

A:    Alana purchases jewelry from trusted contacts within the jewelry industry as well as from individuals who come in to the store for her buying hours.  All jewelry purchased from individuals are held and reported to the Seattle Police Department for review before we begin processing it for resale. 


Q:   Does ALANA, Inc. carry conflict-free diamonds? 

A:   Yes! Alana has a zero tolerance policy toward the trade in conflict diamonds.  Nearly all of our diamond inventory comes from estates, therefore predating modern conflicts.  Our suppliers of new diamond jewelry have guaranteed that their diamonds are from a source free of conflict and all are participants in the System of Warranties put in place by the United States government. 


Q:   How is age and value of the jewelry verified? 

A:   Most of our fine jewelry includes a written appraisal by an independent, GIA certified appraiser.  This document both authenticates the piece, its value and helps to establish a selling price. 


Q:   Can ALANA, Inc. repair my jewelry? 

A:   Yes!  All ALANA associates are capable of checking your jewelry and recommend the work needed before it goes to the shop.  Our turnaround for repairs is 7-10 business days.  We can also get an estimate of repair cost at no obligation.


Q:   Does ALANA, Inc. offer financing? 

A:   Yes, we offer 12 months special financing with approved credit through Wells Fargo.  See an ALANA sales associate for details.


Q:   Does ALANA, Inc. provide a layaway program? 

A:   Yes, a layaway can be started with 25% down payment of the retail price (before tax) with no additional fees.  A minimum purchase of $100.00 is required.  Our layaway programs extend for 30 to 120 days, depending on the price of the item.  Forfeited layaways are subject to a 20% restocking fee of the total purchase price with payment balances transferred to store credit, good for 1 year.  No cash refunds. 


Q:   Does ALANA, Inc. sell vintage mountings? 

A:   No, we sell only finished vintage jewelry.  However, we do have a selection of new jewelry mountings that can be ordered.  


Q:   Does ALANA, Inc. sell loose gemstones? 

A:   We typically do not have loose gemstones for viewing.  However, we can order in new gemstones at no obligation to purchase, if requested. 


Q:   Does ALANA, Inc. offer a diamond upgrade program? 

A:   Yes, our upgrade program designates any single diamond, purchased from ALANA, may be traded in for full credit or the original purchase price towards any future single diamond purchase.  The following conditions apply: the diamond must be in the same condition as at the time of purchase and be accompanied by any reports and/or certificates.  The new diamond selection must be at least double the value of the original diamond. 


Q:   What is filigree?

A:   Filigree is a style of metalwork which was very popular from 1900 to 1930.  It is a decorative design of twisted or pierced, thin platinum, white or yellow gold, which is prized for its very precise intricate craftsmanship.  Often filigree appears as metal lacework. 


Q:   Why is platinum so popular today?

A:   The scarcity - and hardness - of any precious metal influences its value.  Platinum is about 40% denser than gold, so it is much more durable.  Purity is another factor: 14 karat gold is about 58% pure gold whereas platinum is about 95% pure platinum.  (About three tons of gold ore is mined to obtain an ounce of gold, but more than ten tons of platinum ore is mined to obtain an ounce of platinum!) 


Q:   What are your shipping terms? 

A:   ALANA offers FREE shipping with a minimum purchase of $400.00.  ALANA has a flat rate shipping and handling fee of $25.00 on purchases below $400.00. We ship within the United States using USPS (registered ground, insured w/required signature receipt).  When shipping out of state, Washington State sales tax is waived.  Shipping outside of the United States is not available.


Q:   What is the return policy?

A:   All in-store purchases, excluding items on clearance, are subject to exchange only, within 30 days of purchase with receipt.  Gift recipients will be issued a store credit only.  Gift cards are not redeemable for cash.  No cash refunds. 

       Items purchased through the online store may be returned for a full refund withing 10 days of receipt, subject to return authorization.  ALANA will not be responsible for returning shipping fees.  Any returned merchandise must be in the original and unworn condition and accompanied by the original receipt, gift box, and appraisal (if provided) before refunds may be processed. 

       Any special order, customized pieces or altered from its original condition are not returnable or exchangeable.

A:   Our store location is open daily, Monday - Saturday 10:00am to 9:00pm  and Sunday 11:00am to 7:00pm (pacific time)  Our website is always available 24/7.
